Well, today he is known to each and every person, and I wont be wrong If I say he has become a house hold name. Yes, its none other than Baitullah Mehsud. Those who have followed the spread of “war on terror” into Pakistan have two words for this guy, admiration and suspicion.
I say admiration, for the fact that the way he has moved to the top of the barbaric warlord is a mystery itself. When after 9/11 the invasion of Afghanistan took place, he was not heard of.

Abu Osama A society which blames the Muslims for ill-treating women… A society where Judiciary is free, independent and effective… A society which jumps into other nations’ issues without any invitation…. A society where the media is repeatedly broadcasting a fake video of SWAT girl flogging… A society whose ambassador to United Nations has raised this issue in UN and influenced the UN Secretary General to speak and condemn it, without first checking the authenticity of the video. This very same society, this very same country has some stories of its own that is not made as public in international media as the media of US publicizes the stories of Muslim world, especially Pakistan.

Kashif Aziz It is April and summer of 2009 is just around the corner. Karachities are getting ready for the summer by buying fans, air conditioners and fridges, and worrying whether they may be able to use these ‘luxuries’ during the summer or not. In fact, UPS devices and generators are more in demand than the ‘cool’ products.
While this may leads to an interesting needs vs wants marketing study, the impact of unscheduled power cuts is catastrophic on the economy and people of Karachi. The ‘load shedding’ has virtually destroyed business and trade in the cosmopolitan. Manufacturers, producers, service providers, even shop keepers are unable to operate efficiently due to power cuts as long as 6-8 hours a day. Load shedding gave people another reason to fall back on deadlines, quoting ‘light nahi thi, kya karain‘ (what we can do, as there was no power).

Previously, if your memory can scroll a bit deep, we had Richard Boucher. Whenever he used to pay a visit, unfortunately “misery” was the following drama.

Kashif Aziz While the western world, including United States of America, is all hue and cry over the fake video of a girl flogged in Swat, they should be checking their closet for incidents much brutal and savage than what was allegedly happened in Pakistan.
The brutality of law enforcement agencies of USA, including the Police, FBI and CIA is no secret. Leaving the atrocities committed overseas aside, tales of their savagery induced on their own people are exposed every now and then. However, such glimpses of the real face of America do not usually make it to the world. And if they do, the perpetrators got benefit of doubt as they do not have beards, wear turbans or hail from a third world country.

Hina Safdar After few stressful days and some intense kind of posts I wanted to lighten things up with this article. But it seems that no body wants an optimistic person like me. Alas! I could not write some thing lighter to share with you all but another grief is there to share. I am a patriot no doubt, every Pakistani is, but I differ in the sense that I still believe that we will be a developed and prosper nation soon, although signs are not visible yet. The sky of our prosperity is still heavily clouded with despair. I hope we would soon be able to overcome. Insha’Allah.

If you these words a bit exaggerated, I must remind you the time that with every bang, we used to grasp our cell phones and either call or text our loved ones, asking them if they were lucky enough to have survived the carnage of suicide bombing, or has it been too late?

Kashif Aziz Days after the video of a girl flogged by ‘Taliban’, allegedly in Swat, hitting the world and amongst the protests raised by liberal ‘human rights’ activists and fascist political parties, the people of Swat have came forward and denied any thing like that happened in their area.
According to the News, residents of Swat valley have denied occurrence of any incident in which a girl had been whipped in front of public.
Addressing a press conference in Swat Press Club, Raja Liaquat Ali, chairman Pakistan International Human Rights, has said that the video footage of a 17-year old Swat girl being aired on media is fictitious and termed it a conspiracy to malign Islam.

Instead of the betterment, things are sliding down rapidly towards more chaos and confusion and new, much more frightening crisis have emerged. Though a good news has come from Balochistan, the suicide attack in Islamabad has eclipsed whatever relief we got from the Balochistan.

Hamid Abbasi I would say that I am somewhat in a state of shock this morning. Nearly all our papers have carried out news regarding a warning, issued by our top intelligence circles. This time around, they have warned that a plan has been unearthed to rock Pakistan, of course by “RAW”, to carry out a coordinated attack on the life of people’s CJ, Iftikhar Chaudhry. The warning is serious, as it has gone a mile further. According to the details, around 20 Uzbeks have reached the suburbs for this reason, and above all local help, readily available via Baitullah and other alike, is already on its way. Now for a reminder, a same warning directly naming RAW as the culprit behind the recent attacks were issued by our agencies. We have seen the implication of the previous two attacks, but this time the cost and stakes are pretty severe.

Hina Safdar Human trafficking differs from people smuggling. In the latter, people voluntarily request smuggler’s service for fees and there may be no deception involved in the (illegal) agreement. On arrival at their destination, the smuggled person is usually free. On the other hand, the trafficking victim is enslaved, or the terms of their debt bondage are highly exploitative. The trafficker takes away the basic human rights of the victim.(Wikipedia)

It is learnt that recording from a phone camera of above event was sold to international brokers, a lottery for Samar Minallah to earn hundred thousand dollars and free publicity.
Punishment to woman was Islamic or non-Islamic; it is duty of courts and clergy to comment on the matter. Distribution and publicity of above event on such a large scale around the world have political ambitions rather human rights or women protection concerns. If you pick today’s newspaper the statements of a particular group is witness to the fact that this political drama is based on sectarian abhorrence.

Hamid Abbasi The recent developments have clearly shown, atleast for a while, that the power to appoint our public office bearer resides with the people. It was the prayers of grief stricken mothers who got justice for her child killers. It was the blessing of that labourer, who for once ate as much as he always desired, with the “roti” selling at 2rs, and it was the prayers of that father who got free medicines for his dying son, that people’s CM Shahbaz Sharif got his rule back. If the above attributes were not there, this would not have happened.

Hamid Abbasi It is simply heart breaking to see the Valley of Peace, quietly turning into a shooting gallery. It is none other than the beautiful valley of Swat, which has recently transformed into a hub for extremists. The establishment has no answer as to how this development occurred, and why it was allowed to happen in the first place. Swat and extremism was a distant cry before the “War on Terror” started. It was back then, that one Maulana Sufi Mohammad embarked on a Jihad, to assist Taliban forces in Afghanistan. It is worth mentioning that honorable Maulana assembled, through unconfirmed reports an army of around 7000 young devotees and crossed into Afghanistan. It was reported that at the crossing between Afghanistan and Pakistan, they were stopped by the Taliban, as they made it clear that man power was no match against the allied arsenal, but Maulana Sufi Mohammad forced his way through.

Hamid Abbasi The attacks on Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore has left not only the public stunned, but it has also dragged the agencies into a state of shock. A life line for not only Pakistan’s cricket, but rather our overall International image has been lost for good. Even more shocking is the fact that we are still clueless regarding not only the whereabout, but the real hand behind it. One thing is for sure, most fingers are pointing to the Eastern neighbour, and this is not at all wrong. Hamid Abbasi US wants a democratic and stable Pakistan?
Its been years since I have been listening to the noble intentions nearly all US Presidents, and their teams, had for Pakistan. This is the same feeling that I got just days earlier, when President Obama unleashed his AfPak policy. But sitting roughly 10,000 miles away in a third world country named Pakistan, I feel strongly that it is high time that the romance of words, rather than action, from US must end, or atleast deep inside themselves they should realize what your actions have really given to us.

Kashif Aziz Going through the developments and aftermath of recent attack on Police Training Center in Lahore, I sat wondering what is happening to Pakistan. Since last couple of years things are going downhill for us, starting from Lal Masjid crisis, Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry issue, May 12, October 18, Benazir Bhutto’s Assassination and Long March. Not to mention the dire situation of Swat and the Tribal Areas.
It all started with Pervez Musharraf’s acceptance of becoming a part in America’s alleged War on Terror. While Military Inc and Corporatocracy were busy piling the dollars, people of Pakistan died everyday. Innocent civilians, Jawans of Army and Sepoys of Police gave their lives for feudal politicians, corrupt bureaucracy and realestate-agent minded generals.

Commoner At one end, the new Obama administration, their army officials and the media has aligned itself against the Pakistanis security agencies and the army, and on the other side the terrorists have made the country a living hell. Lahore attacks on the G.T. Road are just an example.
The siege at the Manawan Police Center in Lahore has ended, bringing a halt to eight-hour long operation. Security forces have arrested four terrorists before regaining control of the besieged Police Center. Four terrorists were also killed in the operation. But that is surely not the end. It all started long ago and it seems that it would go on for quite a time.

Kashif Aziz March madness continues for Pakistan, especially Lahore. After the attack on Sri Lanka Cricket team and the Long March, Lahore came into limelight again when a Police training camp in the suburbs of Lahore was attacked by heavily armed terrorists.
According to news reports, 10-15 armed terrorists, apparently in Police uniforms with assault rifles and backpacks, attacked the training camp located in Manawan in early hours of the day. There are approximately 700-800 recruits inside the camp and majority of them were in the ground performing the assembly. The terrorists threw hand grenades, followed by heavy firing and made their to the premises, injuring scores of police recruits in the process. While I write this, police, rangers, SSG commandos and other law enforcement agencies have sieged the training center and exchange of heavy fire is going on. Army choppers are also brought in. LEAs are proceeding cautiously as large number of recruits are still in the building.

But now as one year has passed, things have started to go awry. Just within first year, people have come to know that this government is just the continuity of the Musharraf regime. Rather, Pakistan has never been shown so much obsequiousness to the Americans in the last sixty years. Now petty officers like Richard Holbrooke do the press conferences with out top leadership.
